Eliana Tomaz interview Luz Editions

Curious by nature, Eliana is an interior designer and artist with a passion for the simple beauty in life. With an international career, she designs interiors, furniture as well as her brand of accessories Tomaz Design. She uses artistic drawing to explore colors in her projects, paints textiles out of curiosity and creates versatile shapes because she believes that life is constantly changing. In fact, "a vida a acontecer" is her own favorite quote.

Eliana is an introverted woman always looking for new ideas; she draws inspiration from humanity, breathing out humility and her house is certainly her happy place.

1 — Eliana, what's your favorite corner in your home, and why?

"My favorite corner is my sofa, because it's the place where I spend a lot of time with my cats, working with the computer, on social media, watching my favorite things, reading... It is where I love to take a nap; these are moments of retreat, introspection. That's definitely the word: introspection."

2 — Is there anything precious you keep for its meaning?

"Oh so many! It's hard to say. I have vases older than me that came from my mother, I have terrines too. I am very much into the object, it's difficult to define. However, there's this very tiny rubber doll I have since years. When I was younger it was always with me everywhere I go. I like her without knowing why. It's a fist-sized doll, very tiny; perhaps I find some emotional comfort in it, a memory. Besides this I have many other objects. I have a placemat that belonged to my grandmother, a chest of drawers that my grandmother gave me many years ago that I recovered. Everything I have is a lot based in the aesthetic, I don't keep things that I don't think are beautiful, they have to be aesthetically appealing (to me)."

3 — Any favorite book?

"Also many. The first that comes to my mind is O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis (The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis) by Saramago. I really like the way José Saramago wrote, I think he is very human, very raw, true, direct, these are some qualities I like to see in people."

4 — What about your favorite place to eat?

"Vinovero, my favorite! It's a wine bar, but you can also eat there. It's located on top of a mountain. It's a place where I go often and where I take everyone."

5 — If you could live in any other part of the country, where would it be, and why?

"I don't have the name of a defined place, I can only say that it has to be where there is countryside, mountains, access to nature, it's definitely my dream: moving to the countryside. More than the beach, I come from the mountains."

6 — Any favorite Portuguese song?

"Leva-me a Dançar, by Joana Espadinha. Unlike most people, I cling to the sound, the rhythm, and only then to the lyrics."

7 — If you had to offer a Luz Editions product to someone, what would it be and why?

"The lamp is definitely beautiful! Very well made, very feminine, elegant and pretty."

8 — And finally, a word to define your home.

"A casa é a nossa segunda pele, toma conta da tua casa (home is our second skin, take care of your home).

It's a quote I created a while ago. Because (the where we feel at) home is the only place in the world where we are truly ourselves."
