Saudade is arguably the most common Portuguese word. However, this term emblematic of the Portuguese soul doesn't have a translation. Everyone is free to interpret what his/her saudade is.
To create this wall hanging and stay close to my saudade, I chose this image of Artur Pastor. For me, as for these kids, the saudade is first of all the feeling of a whole people turned towards the Atlantic, the gaze fixed on the horizon, the departure, the farewell, a nostalgia that lives in us...
My saudade was probably created by the ambiguity of belonging to two countries, but ultimately none. This feeling of eternal departures and returns, reunions and goodbyes as all immigrants have experienced.
A falta que faz, o tempo que foi, a imagem que ficou.
The lack of it, the time that has gone, the image that remained.
Sentido, sabor, sensação.
Sense, taste, feeling.
Era assim a saudade, sol que nunca se põe.
That's how saudade was, a sun that never sets.
This nostalgic wall hanging is full of charm!
You can use it as a classic tea towel or hang it as a wall decoration.
